This six-week course is perfect for beginners to handbuilding, or for those with some experience who want to build confidence, develop their skills and explore new ways of working with clay.

Alongside exploring the fundamental handbuilding techniques, pinch pots, coil building and slab building, you’ll also have the opportunity to incorporate wheel throwing into your work.

The throwing element is designed for those who have already completed a throwing course and have some experience on the wheel. You should be comfortable with the basics of throwing, including preparing and centring clay, so that you can work independently and develop your existing skills.

Over the six weeks, you’ll explore different ways of making and combining techniques, creating functional and sculptural pieces while developing your own ideas and style. There’ll be plenty of time to experiment with form, texture, pattern and surface decoration, as well as using slips, underglazes and glazes to finish your work.

The course is about encouraging creativity and experimentation while building a stronger understanding of clay, construction, drying, firing and finishing.

By the end of the six weeks, you’ll have created a collection of unique pieces and developed a broader range of skills across both handbuilding and wheel throwing, giving you the confidence to continue exploring your own pottery practice.
